Amethyst is the purple variety of the quartz family with a rich history that goes back thousands of years. The stone has become associated with a number of tales and it is believed to be connected to love, spirituality, and offer supernatural protection. Fine amethysts have been set in jewelry for ages and it was once considered equal in value to ruby, emerald, and sapphire.
Today amethyst remains a beloved gemstone that is popular for use in jewelry and other decorative objects.
Amethyst History
The stone was highly valued in many ancient cultures and believed to protect those who wore it from harm. Ancient Greeks and Romans believed the stone could shield those who wore it from the effect of alcohol. Bracelets made from amethyst dating back thousands of years have been found in Egypt.
In the Middle Ages, it was believed amethyst could calm the mind and help with decision making. It was also said that it helped with nightmares so amulets with the gem were created for protection.
Amethyst Color
Amethyst is one of the most-prized varieties of quartz. The finest color is a deep reddish purple or purple with no visible color zoning. Strongly saturated purple colors are generally preferable as long as they’re not so dark that the stone might look black under dim lighting.

Amethyst Cut
There are a variety of shapes and cutting styles commonly used for amethyst gems. The most popular include rounds, ovals, emerald cuts, triangles, cushions, pears, and marquises. The gem is also a popular choice for one-of-a-kind freeform pieces so other types of cuts can also be found.
