Sapphire: September Birthstone

sapphire gemstone

Sapphire is September’s birthstone and a gem that’s been cherished by collectors for centuries. The royal blue hue of the stone has long been associated with nobility and romance. Its beautiful color is the standard that other precious stones are measured against. The word “Sapphire” comes from the Greek word sappheiros which means blue stone although Sapphires can be found in a variety of colors.

Sapphire Ancient History

Sapphires have captivated people with their striking beauty since ancient times. Persians believed the sky was blue because it was reflecting a giant Sapphire. Elite members of ancient Greece and Rome believed the stone protected their owners from harm and envy and had other healing powers. In the Middle Ages wearing the gem symbolized Heaven. The primary sources of the stone in ancient times were Sri Lanka, India, and Kashmir. It was often mistaken for lapis lazuli because of a similar blue appearance.

Deep Blue Color

Color has a large influence on a Sapphire’s value with the most valuable stones having a strong to vivid color saturation. Sapphires that are velvety blue to violet blue command the highest prices per carat.

Sapphire is a variety of the mineral conrundum, prized for its brilliance and color. The red variety is the only exception, which is classified as ruby. All other colors of corundum are considered Sapphire. This includes the classic blue shades most commonly associated with the gem and yellows, greens, and pinks that you may not have realized were considered Sapphires.

Sapphire Jewelry

Its durability and wide range of colors, particularly blue, makes Sapphire a popular stone for many types of jewelry. It has historically signified romance which makes it popular for engagement rings and other types of jewelry that show commitment. The stone will require gentle clean with soap and water to maintain its luster.
